Osteopathy is a health care system, complementary to other medical practices. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions.
Osteopathy is often mistaken for a method to only treat bones and the spine, whereas in fact, Osteopathy is a holistic approach to support the body in its self-healing process and regain an equilibrium between structure and function. The holistic approach is a core principle behind Osteopathy.
It is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole and that no part of the body works in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis.
As Osteopaths we take the time to understand patient’s unique combination of symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. We seek for areas of lesser mobility where restrictions in range of motion affects the function of the organ or articulation and thereby affects the body as a whole.
Since all structures in the body are linked, lack of mobility in one region will result in an increasing stress in an other area of the body. Thereby the pain/symptoms will often show up in other parts of the body that have to compensate, rather than in the area of restricted motion itself. Sometimes these compensatory patterns build up through a longer period of time and result in pain/symptoms when the body’s own ability to compensate has exceeded it’s limit.
Most people will therefore not be aware of the problems’ origin but only of the symptom when it occurs. It is the Osteopaths goal to detect the origin of those functional disorders and optimize movement and function using exact and subtle manual techniques. Osteopathy does not involve the use of drugs or surgery.
